Jeronimo Bassano musician \BJ M.1490-1545
Born: before 1490 Bassano del Grappa, Italy
Died: 1545 Venice, Italy
Spouse: ?? ?? F. -
Jeronimo Bassano was an instrument maker and sackbut player to the
Doge of Venice. He made wind instruments.
The village of Bassano del Grappa is roughly 35 miles to the
northeast of Venice. The noted artist Jacopo Bassano came from
there too.
Jeronimo Bassano was head of the family of musicians who moved to
England before 1540. Many believe that the members of this family were
originally Jewish and had dark complexions because they had Moorish
Page .2. 12-MAR-2004
ancestry. Many researchers believe that this family had come from
Spain to Italy. It is believed that Jeronimo Bassano himself
remained in Italy when his sons moved to England.
The noted librarian and historian Stephen W. Massil, who is
associated with the Jewish Historical Society of England, on
16-OCT-2003 pointed out to the author of this webpage an article by
Alessio Ruffati which offers strong evidence that the Bassano
family of Italy was not Jewish. This article is listed in the
bibliography.
The Italian name Jeronimo is the same as our Geronimo or Jerome. It is
the same name as Hieronymous also.
One internet source which is unverified suggests that an older
Jeronimo Bassano changed to Christianity before he moved
from Spain to Italy. His original name is believed to have
been Joshua ben Joseph ibn Vives al-Lorqui and his original
Christian name is believed to have been Hieronymus de Santa
Fe. While the source indicates that it is certain that this
is not the Jeronimo Bassano whose sons moved to England,
it may be that that Jeronimo is a descendant of the first.
One source indicates that the father of Jeronimo Bassano may have
been named Santo Bassano who may have been born about 1440 in Bassano.

The name Emilia is often written as Aemilia. Many times she is
referred to as Aemilia Lanyer.
Emilia for some time was a mistress to Henry Carey, the first Lord
Hunsdon, who was also Lord Chamberlain. She became pregnant by Henry
Carey and was married off to Alphonse Lanier. Henry Carey
was the father of her son, Henry Lanier. Emilia Bassano was
raised with the Countess of Kent, Susan Wingfield.
Most scholars now believe that Emilia Bassano was the Dark Lady of
Sonnets 127-151 written by William Shakespeare and that she had an
affair with him. Emilia Bassano was a feminist at a time when
there were not many others. Emilia Bassano was a musician and a

poet. The instrument she played was called the virginals and was a
forerunner of the piano of today. She published a book of poetry with
a Christian theme not long after Shakespeare's sonnets were published.
Alphonse Lanier was one of the fifty-nine musicians that played at
the funeral of Queen Elizabeth I.

Nicholas was court musician to King Henry II of France, and in 1561 he
was asked to come to London to be a court musician to Queen Elizabeth
I. He arrived at the court of Elizabeth I in 1561. His wife, Lucretia,
was from the famous Bassano family of Venice. That family produced
many court musicians and artists. Very little is known about Nicholas
Lanier's first wife. It is highly likely that the marriage of
Lucreece Bassano and Nicholas Lanier was arranged by Queen
Elizabeth I, herself. Nicholas Lanier of Rouen, France, was master
flutist to Henri II of France and then in England was Master of Flutes
for Elizabeth I and James I. Nicholas Lanier had safe passage to
England arranged by his patroness, the widowed Catherine de Medici.
Nicholas Lanier played the flute and the cornet. He was a Huguenot
which means he was an early French Protestant. Nicholas and Lucreece
lived in St Olave Parish, Hart Street, London. They became fairly well
to do and had a theater in their home.

Cambridge University after years of controversy and accusations
against his magical potions and cures.

Countess of Cumberland, by Emilia Bassano Lanier.

To the Ladie Margaret Countesse Dowager of Cumberland.
Right Honourable and Excellent Lady, I may
say with Saint Peter, Siluer nor gold haue
Page .27. 12-MAR-2004
I none, but such as I haue, that give I you: for
hauing neither rich pearles of India, nor fine
gold of Arabia, nor diamonds of inestimable (5)
value; neither those rich treasures, Arramaticall Gums, in-
cense, and sweet odours, which were presented by those
Kingly Philosophers to the babe Iesus, I present vnto you
euen our Lord Iesus himselfe, whose infinit value is not to
be comprehended within the weake imagination or wit of (10)
man: and as Saint Peter gaue health to the body, so I deliuer
you the health of the soule; which is this most pretious
pearle of all perfection, this rich diamond of deuotion, this
perfect gold growing in the veines of that excellent earth
of the most blessed Paradice, wherein our second Adam had (15)
his restlesse habitation. The sweet incense, balsums, odours,
and gummes that flowes from that beautifull tree of Life,
sprung from the roote of Jessie, which is so super-excellent,
that it giueth grace to the meanest & most vnworthy hand
that will vndertake to write thereof; neither can it receiue (20)
any blemish thereby: for as a right diamond can lose no
whit of his beautie by the black foyle vnderneath it, nei-
ther by beeing placed in the darke, but retaines his naturall
beauty and brightnesse shining in greater perfection than
before; so this most pretious diamond, for beauty and riches (25)
exceeding all the most pretious diamonds and rich jewels
of the world, can receiue no blemish, nor impeachment, by
my vnworthy hand writing; but wil with the Sunne retaine
his owne brightnesse and most glorious lustre, though ne-
uer so many blind eyes looke vpon him. Therefore good (30)
Madame, to the most perfect eyes of your vnderstanding, I
deliuer the inestinable [sic] treasure of all elected soules, to bee
perused at conuenient times; as also, the mirrour of your
most worthy minde, which may remaine in the world ma-
ny yeares longer than your Honour, or my selfe can liue, to (35)
be a light vnto those that come after, desiring to tread in the
narrow path of virtue, that leads the way to heauen. In
which way, I pray God send your Honour long to conti-
nue, that your light may so shine before men, that they may
glorifie your father which is in Heauen: and that I and ma- (40)
ny others may follow you in the same tracke. So wishing
you in this world all increase of health and honour, and in
the world to come life euerlasting, I rest.

The above website is for the Jewish Ghetto of Venice, Italy. That
Ghetto was the oldest in Europe. Both Bassano families have ties to
it. The Venetian Jews were confined to this Ghetto beginning in 1516
until 1797 when Napoleon put an end to the segregation and had the
Ghetto gates destroyed.
