CHAPTER: 001: Introduction

Since I learned to play as well as I did from studying unannotated
games, the following games are unannotated.
I wish to thank my long time friend and opponent Frank Kim Berry_FKa
who prompted my interest in trying to preserve a bit of Oklahoma Chess
History and who helped collect these games. He and his brother James
A. Berry_JAa played many good games against me.
The first tournament for me was the Oklahoma City Open in JUN-1962. I
got to know Frank and his brother Jim at that tournament. Another
player at that tournament that I got to know was J. Franklin
Campbell_JFa. He told me at the time that the Berry brothers started
their games by attacking and did not quit until they ran out of
pieces! There are games below where I played against Frank and Jim
Berry in which I was the one to run out of pieces because of their
attacking style!
That tournament was directed by Jerry G. Spann_JGa who gave several of
us memberships in the United States Chess Federation to get us to play
in the senior tournament. At that time he was FIDE Vice-President for
the United States. FIDE was the organization which governed Chess for
the whole world.
Two other Oklahoma players that I got to know at that tournament were
Keith Carson_Kia and Joe Lawrence "Larry" Hill_JLa. Both of them
played many good games against me over the next several years.
One other fine player I got to know there was Roy DeVault_Rya. All of
the above mentioned gentlemen both played more Chess and did more for
Chess than I did. I have always regarded all of them very highly.

The Oklahoma Chess Foundation publishes the Oklahoma Chess Quarterly
which is a quarterly publication containing articles about Oklahoma
Chess players both past and present. A recent issue ran 63 pages and
had numerous pertinant articles. One superb article was on Dr. Bela
Rozsa_Bla who was a nationally known Chess player and musician from
Oklahoma. The author was Frank K. Berry_FKa who has done much ground
breaking research in the area of history of Oklahoma Chess. Many other
items were also excellent.
