Several persons helped with information for this webpage.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oma Goldie Stapp Crouch \CJWSO F.1904-2001
Goldie remembered her grandfather, William Marion Colston and the
family members who came or visited Oklahoma.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Forrest Colston \CJWWF M. -
A major source for the Colston family was The Colston Cousin
Document whose author was Forrest Colston.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jerry Morrow \CJDHBJ M. -
Jerry provided a remarkable amount of information about James
Colston and the Studdard families. He is a great great
grandson of James Colston.

CHAPTER: 002: James Colston and Family
**********************************************************************
One source has said that James was a big red headed man from Ireland.
We know, however, from Jerry Morrow that he was born in Wilkes
Co, Georgia.
The original Colston homeplace was located north of Sewells Church,
just inside of Walton Co, GA, west of Morgan Co and southwest
of Rutledge, Georgia.
Cousin Jerry Morrow tells that the Colston home place is located
in two counties, Walton Co and Morgan Co, and that there was
an agreement that taxes should only be paid in Walton County. When
he first knew about the Colston home place it consisted of sixty
acres. When interstate 20 came through, eleven acres were sliced off.
When Jerry walked over the Colston home place in the sixties, he found
an open well and the remains of a log building which had been either a
corn crib or small barn. There was not a sign of a house.
Page .2. 17-OCT-2011
Jerry Morrow tells that in times past in Georgia, the name
Colston was pronounced Coast-on.
According to Jerry Morrow, in the 1890's James
Colston's widow, Susan Jackson Colston, was receiving
eight dollars per month as a widow's pension because James
served in the "Indian Wars" under a Captain Lucas. Jerry points
out that this cannot have been the Civil War for one thing
because an 1863-1864 manpower survey by the Confederate
government lists James Colston as a 52-year old farmer.
Jerry Morrow also tells that James Colston's daughter Matilda
Hill Colston used to tell that when her father returned home from
war that he was so dirty and bedraggled that his children ran and hid
from him. It is hard to know what war it was here since the time
period must have been around 1850 or later because of the ages of his
children. However, again it is believed that James Colston was not
in the Civil War.

CHAPTER: 003: William Marion Colston and Family
**********************************************************************
William Marion Colston, known as Bill, was born on 08-APR-1846.
He was about the right age to get into the later years of the Civil
War. The following story about Bill Colston comes from Jerry
Morrow which explains why Bill Colston did not have
Confederate service.
Jerry Morrow wrote:
During the Civil War, Bill either burned or skinned the shin of one
of his legs rather badly. The family consulted a doctor who turned out
to be a quack when he advised putting a poltice of wood ashes on the
wound. This only made it worse and infected. They worried as to
whether he might even lose the leg at times. He was examined by
Confederate doctors at various times but was never deemed well enough
for service. He is listed on the 1863-64 manpower survey as age 16, a
farmer with a "disability".
William Marion Colston came to what is today known as Walters,
Cotton Co, Oklahoma which was then Oklahoma Territory, with his
daughter Sarah Frances Colston Stapp, when she came by train in
1905. She came with her two children at the time, Myrtice Alton
Stapp and Oma Goldie Stapp, to move to Oklahoma Territory to
be with her husband William Thomas Stapp who had already moved
there with his father Alexander S. Stapp.
It is believed that William Marion Colston returned to Georgia
after he got his daughter and her two children settled in with her
husband in Oklahoma Territory. Then after several years, it is
believed, he returned to what was then the State of Oklahoma and for
some time visited with his family in Walters, Oklahoma.
Oma Goldie Stapp described her grandfather, William Marion
Colston, as being a large man but he was not tall. He described
himself as a Hardshell Baptist and attended church in what is today
Page .3. 17-OCT-2011
Temple, Oklahoma just five miles south and five miles east of Walters.
Every Sunday morning he would hitch up his horse and buggy and would
go to Temple to church. He eventually went back to Social Circle,
Georgia.

CHAPTER: 004: Matilda Hill Colston and Family
**********************************************************************
Jerry Morrow, who is a grandson of Homer Lee Studdard, tells
the following story about his grandfather's aunt, Matilda Hill
Colston Horton Studdard. The event occurred when Jerry was a small
child. He remembers that she was called Tildie.
The family was getting together for a meal to celebrate some event.
Tildie gave Homer a quarter to purchase some steak with. Of course,
Homer added some money to it. After the meal, Tildie, dead seriously,
told Homer, "Homer, I think a dimes worth would have been a gracious
plenty, there's lots left over".
Jerry Morrow mentions that Matilda raised some adopted children.
Matilda's sister Mary Elizabeth Colston is believed to have been
married to a man with the last name of McGloglin, and to have died
before their children were grown. Matilda's first husband, Seaborn R.
Horton, was married previously in 1849 in Jasper Co, Georgia
to a lady with a name spelled almost the same as McGloglin. The
adopted children that Matilda raised may have been the children of her
sister Mary Elizabeth Colston.
Starting in 1935 Matilda lived with her nephew Homer Lee Studdard
and his family. Jerry Morrow remembers her quite well.

CHAPTER: 020: 27-SEP-1874 Letter from Amanda Jackson Davis
**********************************************************************
The following is a letter from Amanda Jackson Davis to her sister
Susan Jackson who was the wife of James Colston. A copy of
this letter has been graciously provided by Jerry Morrow.
The letter was written in unusually legible handwriting. The original
spelling is preserved. The letter has been broken into paragraphs for
easier reading.
This letter is truly extraordinary and well shows the suffering and
hard times in the South after the Civil War.
Amanda refers to her husband as Mr. Davis. She refers to her sister's
husband as Mr. Colston.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Selma, Alabama, Sept. 27th 1874.
Dear Sister, I wrote to you two or three months ago, but have not
received a single line from you. Have you failed to receive my letter,
or what is the matter? I would be glad to hear from you all often.
We are all well, that is, we are able to be up. Mr. Davis has had an
attack of fever this summer, but is able to attend to his business.
Little Sallie, the baby, has also been quite sick but is now up though
she looks very pale and bad yet.
Times have been very hard in Alabama this summer, as everything is
very high and money very scarce.
I received a letter from brother William and from his son Andrew and
was glad to hear that they had gone to Texas. How long has he been
there, and what portion of the State is he in? How long has it been
since you heard from him? How many children has he got? Is old man
Tomlin still living? You did not say anything about him in your
letter. I will write to Mary soon, and also to brother William.
Page .18. 17-OCT-2011
We lived in Alabama from the time we left Georgia until after the
war, when we removed to Memphis, Tennessee, where we remained about
six years. We left there last September after the yellow fever broke
out, and came back to Selma, Alabama.
We have only three children living, we have three dead, two little
boys Lamalmon and Jeffie and one little girl Janie. We buried one of
the little boys one day and the other the next day; and in less than
nine months after their deaths we buried our little daughter, Janie.
Our oldest daughter, Lola, the one born in Covington, is in her
sixteenth year: our next oldest, Carrie, is eight years of age; and
our baby, Sallie, was six years old the 26th of last March.
I have had a great deal of afflictions during the past five or six
years, but the most unfortunate of all is my loosing my eye-sight. I
have been blind going on three years, which was caused by a hard
spell of sickness, spinal mengittis. I was nearly paralized for three
or four months. I can tell daylight from dark, but cannot see how to
attend to anything.
Which three of your children is it that is married, and who did they
marry? Which one is dead? Did sister Nancy every marry again? Are her
two boys still living and with her? Tell her she must write to me.
Has brother William got any other children besides those he had when
I left Covington? And is Nancy, his wife, still living and all the
children.
Send sister Mary word that I am going to write to her, and that she
must be sure to write to me. I wrote to her several times since I left
Covington but never received any answer, and concluded that she must
be dead.
Is Mr. Colston still living in the same old place? Mr. Davis is at
present engaged in the printing business.
Write to me and let me know if times are hard where you are. Times
are hard here, in fact everywhere we can hear from it is the same. Mr.
Davis says he would like to go with me and the children to see you
all, but traveling expenses are so high, he does not think he ever can
do so.
Your sister, Amanda J. Davis
write soon as you get this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Covington, Georgia is in Newton Co, Georgia and is about twelve
miles west and south a little from Social Circle, Georgia which is in
Walton Co.
