----------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is from BUTLERS AND KINFOLK by Elmer Ellsworth Butler,
Brown University, 1903.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Joanna Ellenwood, born 10-OCT-1764 daughter of Benjamin and Susanna
(Corning) Ellenwood who married 25-AUG-1783, Eleazer Butler, 2nd son
of Eleazer and Lydia (Durkee) Butler, was descended from Ralph
Ellenwood, planter, who in September, 1635, when 28 years old came to
New England in the Truelove.
Ralph Ellenwood settled first at Salem, Mass. later he removed to
Beverly. He married at Salem March 14, 1655, Helen Lyn, who, says F.
E. Crowell, Boston Genealogist, was probably his second wife. He
deposed in 1669-70 that he was about 60 years old and dated Jan. 7,
1673, appoints his widow executrix and names their children: Ralph
(born March 18, 1657), John (born July 2,1659), Joseph (born 18,3 mo.
1662), Mary (born 3,2 mo. 1664), Elizabeth (born June 27,1666),
Benjamin (born 1,2 mo. 1668) and David (born July 6, 1670).
Ralph Ellenwood in 1675 was of the Beverly contingent in the
expedition against the Indians. When the first church of Beverly was
organized in 1667, Ralph Ellenwood was among the members.
Page .2. 12-MAR-2004

faith and repentance, yet desires to wait a while before she comes to
ye Lords Supper (Beverly Church Records). He died at Beverly March 28,

Of the 14 children of Benjamin and Mary Ellenwood, David (3)
Ellenwood; born in Beverly Dec. 11, 1698, married there, first Joanna
Balch on Dec. 23, 1719. She was born in Beverly April 30, 1703,
daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ober) Balch, a great great grand
daughter of John Balch, one of the Cape Ann planters who were at Stony
Point in Gloucester Harbour in 1624. She died, age 23 years, May 23,
1725, and he married, second, in Beverly, Dec. 6, 1725, Margaret
Wallis, born in Beverly Nov. 1, 1699, daughter of Nathaniel and Anna
(Rich) Wallis. He died in Beverly in 1777, and his widow Margaret was

CHAPTER: 004: Captain Benjamin Ellenwood Remembered

Captain Benjamin Ellenwood \RBDBNB M.1783-1815

----------------------------------------------------------------------
On April 3, 1813, [Captain] Benjamin [Ellenwood] succeeded Thomas
Freeman in charge of the privately armed schooner "Retaliation". By
July he had brought in nine prizes, besides those which he had driven
ashore. On September 2, 1813, he was promoted to the schooner
"Shannon", also out of Liverpool, Nova Scotia. With perhaps one
exception, he was the most successful privateersman out of Nova Scotia
in the War of 1812, and only thirty years of age. The "Shannon"
measured 146 tons and had a crew of 50 men with five guns. He had only
six men left when he manned out her sixteenth prize two months later.
(Charles H.J. Snider, "Under the Red Jack: Privateers of the Maritime
Provinces of Canada in the War of 1812"
Captain Benjamin Ellenwood was a sea captain on the St. Lawrence
Seaway. He was murdered on board his ship on Dolby's Wharf in Halifax
Harbour. He had just arrived and had sold his cargo. He was murdered
by one of his own sailors with a marlin spike. James Archibald of
Pictou was later captured, convicted and executed for that crime.
Captain Benjamin Ellenwood was one of the most successful
privateers for the British during the War of 1812. He captained such
schooners as the "Retaliation", "Bounty", and "Shannon".
After the death of Captain Benjamin Ellenwood his widow, Epiphene
Tryphena Nickerson Ellenwood, married a man named William
Riggs in 1817. William Riggs had been a Halifax, Nova Scotia
school teacher. They and their two children later moved from Nova
Scotia to the USA and then by covered wagon over the Oregon Trail to
Salem, Oregon. The children of Captain Ellenwood were moved by their
grandfather, Nathaniel Ellenwood, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and
later to Vermont.
It was in Vermont that Captain Ellenwood's daughter Epiphene
Ellenwood met and married Appleton Ballard.
Captain Ellenwood's son, Benjamin Ellenwood, later lived in
New York and had three of his sons in the Union Army during the Civil
War. Their names were: David J. Ellenwood, Warren B. Ellenwood
and Sidney W. Ellenwood.
Warren B. Ellenwood escaped from Libby Prison during the Civil War
by hanging beneath a box car. He made his way home and would never
talk about his experiences.
Sidney W. Ellenwood died in 1863 in the notorious Andersonville
Prison in Georgia.
