who have the name Creth or Creath.
At the moment we have a total of six, but it must be presumed that
there are some more. Here are the six.
----------------------------------------------------------------
William Creath Baines merchant M.1814-1895
----------------------------------------------------------------
Robert Creath Baines M.1873-1922
----------------------------------------------------------------
Charles Creth Smith M.1872-1938
----------------------------------------------------------------
Crethie Munro Smith F.1904-1990
----------------------------------------------------------------
Then, there is niece and a great niece of Crethie listed above.
Both of them have the name Creth in their names. These two
ladies are contemporary with us now and are, therefore, not
listed here by name or birthdate.
----------------------------------------------------------------
We have known from the mother of Charles Creth Smith above why
he was named Creth. His mother was:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Martha Julia Ann Baines "Mattie" F.1851-1930
----------------------------------------------------------------
Incidentally, she is the daughter of William Creath Baines, but
according to our knowledge of her that had nothing to do with naming
her son Charles Creth Smith.
Her uncle was the celebrated Texas Baptist minister George Washington
Baines who had been president of Baylor University 1861-1862.
He as it eventually turned out was the great grandfather to Lyndon
Baines Johnson, the U.S. President.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Lyndon Baines Johnson M.1908-1973
----------------------------------------------------------------
Mattie and her parents and siblings all lived in Denton, Denton
Co, Texas from about 1857 to about 1890. She knew her uncle, George
Washington Baines, well and also another celebrated Texas Baptist
minister, J. W. D. Creath.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Joseph Warner Dossey Creath minister Baptist M.1809-1881
----------------------------------------------------------------
Reverend Creath, as the Baines family referred to him,
travelled all over Texas preaching and collecting money for
Baylor University. Mattie named her first son Charles Creth
Smith because of two reasons. First the whole Baines family
thought so much of the Reverend Joseph Warner Dossey Creath.
Secondly, she had been a school teacher and realized the
pronunciation problem with the name Creath. Mattie and her
sister Nancy had been the first two ladies in the State of Texas
to have teaching certificates.
The pronunciation problem of the name Creath is due to the "ea"
dipthong in the name. In American English we pronounce that
dipthong in several ways. We pronouce it as in beat or as in
head or as in break. There may be others, too. The name Creath
should rhyme with breath and not with breathe. So, Mattie
changed the spelling from Creath to Creth to make it simpler to
Page .3. 06-DEC-2013
pronounce. We are familiar with first names like Beth and Seth.
Creth rhymes with them just fine.
How do we know that Mattie's son Charles Creth Smith was named
after Reverend J. W. D. Creath and that she changed the spelling
from Creath to Creth.
1. She told that her son Creth was named after the Rev. Creath.
2. His name was always spelled Creth and not Creath.
3. She had been a school teacher and what better than that!
Just one more point is important here. Who did she tell. She told that
story to at least two of her granddaughters both of whom well
remembered her telling this. One was this writer's Mother and one was
this writer's Aunt. Both were daughters of Charles Creth Smith.
The two daughters of Charles Creth Smith who remembered were:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Crethie Munro Smith F.1904-1990
Leola May Smith F.1910-1996
----------------------------------------------------------------
Joseph graduated from Virginia Baptist Seminary in 1837 and was
a Baptist minister. He and his first wife were commissioned as
missionaries to Texas in 1837.
He served churches in Huntsville, Anderson, Cold Springs and San
Antonio. In 1876 he presided over the Texas Baptist Convention.
He was associated with Baylor University as fund raiser, trustee and
as president of the board of trustees.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Joseph went by the name: J. W. D. Creath. He was greatly beloved
by all of the Baptists in Texas.
Joseph was especially liked and admired by George Washington
Baines and his brother William Creath Baines.
