This webpage is dedicated to the following two lovely Christian
ladies who would have been thrilled to know it was finally being put
down for posterity. Either of them could have done it much better than
it is. In their later years, both were most interested in the
preservation of the history of the Musgrove family. It is the author's
great regret that he only half listened to what they had to tell. Both
of these ladies were gone before we ever knew what we had. Most of the
anecdotal information is from remembered conversations with them which
various family members have remembered.

Note that the first name Ernest is spelled Earnest in the Musgrove
Family Bible. Also, note that the middle name Edward is spelled
Edwards in the Musgrove Family Bible. The middle name Edwards very
probably indicates that it was the maiden name of an ancestor of Eva
Elizabeth McDonald Musgrove. Both names are generally spelled as
Ernest and Edward below because that is what the source HISTORY OF
COTTON COUNTY... uses.

CHAPTER: 001: Thomas Musgrove and His Wife Ann Stinson
Updated 2002/05/27
**********************************************************************
There are two stories which have come down in family tradition about
Thomas Musgrove and his wife Ann Stinson Musgrove.
Thomas Musgrove was born on 15-DEC-1807. His granddaughter,
Nina May Musgrove, believed that he was born in Germany, but
he was surely born in the English Isles from his last name. In
the early eighteen-thirties he was a sailor on a German ship. At
one time the ship docked at Hull, England. It was at Hull on the
northeastern English sea coast that Ann Stinson and her
family lived. Thomas Musgrove was on shore leave when he met
Ann Stinson. They were married on 02-APR-1835. Sometime
between that date and about 1849 they immigrated to Canada where
their son James Thomas Musgrove was born on 12-JAN-1849.
Apparently the Stinson family and most likely the Musgrove family also
were very strong Methodists. In any case family tradition is that
either the parents or grand parents of Ann Stinson had heard John
Wesley preach.

CHAPTER: 002: Other Children of Thomas Musgrove and Ann Stinson
**********************************************************************
Thomas Musgrove and Ann Stinson had a son named William
Musgrove who was born in England in 1840. William Musgrove,
who was called Will, moved about a great deal with whatever business
he was in. When he died he was in Canada. At that time the relatives
in Canada appealed to James Thomas Musgrove for help in burying
Will. James Thomas Musgrove had already buried Will's son Weldon
and did not feel he had to help to bury Will also.
John Weldon Musgrove (1866-1888) lived with the James Thomas
Musgrove family in Barnes, Kansas. Weldon, as he was called, was
sickly and died tragically at age 21 with the measles just a short
time after he and his girl friend had become engaged. He is buried at
Barnes. His father was William Musgrove who was a brother to James
Thomas Musgrove.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are three quotations from Nina May Musgrove Grimes that are
remembered.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Once upon reading about a man who had molested a lady, she said, "Why
don't they do like they did in the old days and just take him out and
hang him!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In expressing her didain for certain young members of the family she
said, "These young people of today just don't have any guts!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On another occasion in regards to some of the young members of the
Page .5. 11-MAR-2007
family she said, "They want the best bull in the county for their
cows, but they'll marry just anybody!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cousin Irene Eva Fletcher was a first cousin to Nina May
Musgrove Grimes. She lived in Hollywood, California and worked as
a nurse. She never married. Here is a recollection of Nina by Cousin
Irene. She wrote this on 21-AUG-1954 and sent it to the Walters
Herald, the newspaper in Walters, Oklahoma. This was furnished by
Suzanne Ballard Sell.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My earliest reflection of her (Nina) was in her early childhood when
as a little curly headed girl she came on a visit to Toronto, Canada
with her parents. When requested for a song, she would respond in a
clear sweet voice and in a most dramatic style, the Oklahoma's Pioneer
Song, namely:
Oklahoma Land! Oklahoma Land!
As on this burning Tract I stand!
I raise my eyes across the Plains,
And wonder why it never rains.
But Gabriel calls with trumpet sound
And says "the rain has passed around"!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aunt Nina May Musgrove Grimes had a Canadian dime which was her
souvenir of that trip. It was worn nearly smooth. She would tell that
it had been nearly new when she first got it.

CHAPTER: 005: Moving to Oklahoma by Nina May Musgrove Grimes
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am Nina May Grimes, formerly Nina Musgrove. My mother, Eva
Elizabeth McDonald, met and married my father, James Thomas
Musgrove, in Canada near St. Thomas. They later moved to Kansas
where I was born, March 31, 1893. We lived in Barnes, Kansas, until I
was nine years old when my father drew a school quarter near Walters,
Oklahoma. My father had been raising fat cattle and hogs which he
shipped to Kansas City to market, so he decided to move to Oklahoma.
We loaded corn in one wagon, and oats in another. Mother made a crock
full of cookies, several fruit cakes and fried down a hog. A neighbor
gave us two gallons of apple butter and about fifteen loaves of bread.
We started to Oklahoma with two covered wagons. My father drove one,
and my sister and her husband the other. My two brothers drove a
hayrack with hay for the horses and some necessary furniture. Part of
the time my father drove a team and surrey, and my mother and I drove
a black horse hitched to the buggy. The black horse, "Nig", we had
found in our cornfield one morning. We never knew how he got there. We
kept him a number of years. My sister and I had both ridden on him to
school.
Page .6. 11-MAR-2007
Our journey was very pleasant though Kansas, but when we reached
Oklahoma, the roads were bad. There were no bridges over the creeks
and rivers and when we reached the North Canadian River, they had a
big rain, so we had to camp several days until it ran down so we could
cross.
We kept travelling south on a very little road. Several days later we
began to see teepees. It became harder to get decent drinking water.
My brothers kept guns handy and if they saw ducks on a lake they would
shoot them and send the old dog, "Fido", to swim in and drag them out.
This helped our food bill. When we got to Sugar Creek the banks were
so steep the horses could hardly get up the banks. Fido jumped in to
crowd them up, but the current was so strong it sucked him under some
driftwood. My brother jumped in with his clothes on to pull the dog
from under the driftwood before he drowned. The ducks, rabbits and
such helped on our grocery bill.
I finished High School in Walters in 1913, and then went to Edmond
Normal School for Teachers. I taught school in Cotton County for
forty-two years, and have been a faithful member of the First
Presbyterian Church in Walters, where I reside at this writing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nina May Musgrove Grimes several times told the following story.
The front part of the old Musgrove house was originally one or two
miles south of where it is now. James Thomas Musgrove wanted to
move it to where it sits today. A quick snow storm put a layer of
slippery snow on the ground. All of the neighbor men helped to place
the house on skids through the night. James Thomas Musgrove
severly injured his leg by suffering a very bad cut during the process
of putting the house on skids. With a number of teams of horses
hitched to the house the men were able to drag it just to the corner
of the Musgrove property before the sun came out the next morning and
melted the snow! Later in the spring a man came around who had the
equipment to jack the house up to move it properly. It was then moved
to the present location it is on.

CHAPTER: 007: Why the Methodists became Presbyterians
**********************************************************************
Ann Eldora Musgrove Ballard, who went by the name Dora Ballard,
often told the following story regarding which church the Musgrove and
Ballard families went to after they moved in 1902 from Barnes,
Washington Co, Kansas to what became Walters, Cotton Co,
Oklahoma. Her family, the Musgroves, had long been Methodists as had
the Ballard family when she married into it. The Musgrove and Ballard
families attended the Methodist Church in Walters when they first
moved there. However, they soon switched over to the Presbyterian
Church in Walters because of the following event. In those days it was
common to invite the church minister over to dinner after church.
Persons who live in the country in the southwest call lunch dinner and
supper supper instead of the other way around. Anyway after dinner it
was customary for all the men to gather in the parlor to smoke. The
Methodist minister, heaven forbid, would smoke with the other men! The
Musgrove and Ballard families switched to the Presbyterian Church in
Walters because the Presbyterian minister did not smoke.
This story used to bewilder some of the Ballard descendants greatly
because of the following questions. First, why did the Methodist
minister smoke? Second, why did the Ballard family expect him not to
smoke? Third, why did the Presbyterian minister not smoke? The answer
to these questions is that the Ballard family had been members of the
Methodist Episcopal Church in Kansas which was the Northern Methodist
Church whose ministers were not permitted to smoke. The Methodist
Church in Walters was a Methodist Episcopal Church, South which was
the Southern Methodist Church which, of course, did permit its
ministers to smoke because tobacco was a Southern product. The
Presbyterian Church was a Northern Presbyterian Church whose ministers
were not permitted to smoke.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In a letter to Suzanne Ballard Sell on 21-MAR-1974 Nina May
Musgrove Grimes wrote the following about the First Presbyterian
Church in Walters, Cotton Co, Oklahoma.
Page .8. 11-MAR-2007
Your Great Grandfather Musgrove (James Thomas Musgrove) and your
Grandfather Ballard (Frederick Eugene Ballard) and your Uncle
Allie (Alfred Edward Musgrove) and Uncle Earnest (John Earnest
Musgrove) helped build it. When they finished building it they
wanted to dedicate it free of debt. So Gene (Frederick Eugene
Ballard) and papa (James Thomas Musgrove) borrowed $100 each
and helped clear it. It was a dry hard year but they were real
Christians and God always took care of them even though they were
pioneers.

CHAPTER: 008: The Steam Tractor and the Big Pasture
**********************************************************************
The Big Pasture was opened for settlement about the time of Oklahoma's
statehood. James Thomas Musgrove knew there would be vast areas to
be plowed, so he bought a steam tractor to plow with. His two sons
operated it with some help from their sister. Alfred Edward
Musgrove and his brother John Ernest Musgrove did the plowing
with the large steam tractor. Their sister, Nina May Musgrove,
helped by driving the wagons loaded with either coal or water to power
the plow.
It was a huge contraption with wheels ten feet in diameter. The steam
engine was powerful enough that people were continually surprised at
how fast the untilled ground of the Big Pasture could be plowed.
Gullies three and four feet deep were plowed under without pause by
the huge tractor. It is believed that it was one of just very few that
size and that none larger were ever built.
The steam tractor was lost during the financial panic of 1908. It had
to be sold to someone who took it to New Mexico.

CHAPTER: 009: Hunting with President Theodore Roosevelt
Updated 2007/03/11
**********************************************************************
In 1906 Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States. He and
his entourage travelled to southwestern Oklahoma Territory to go
hunting in the Big Pasture area. There was quite a number of western
celebrities with him on that hunt. There were several of the Deputy
U.S. Marshalls who had helped rid Indian Territory of outlaws along.
Quanah Parker, the famous Commanche chief, was there too. Last but not
least there were Alfred Edward Musgrove and John Ernest
Musgrove in the hunting party, too.
The hunting was done six miles due west of what is today called
Walters, Cotton County, Oklahoma.

CHAPTER: 010: Ann Eldora Musgrove Ballard
Updated 2007/03/10
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ann Eldora Musgrove Ballard was ten years and ten months younger
that her husband Frederick Eugene Ballard. He preferred to go by
the name of Gene. In Barnes, Washington Co, Kansas, Gene worked in
his father's general store. Dora, as Ann Eldora went by, used to go to
the general store and was quite impressed by Gene. He was a lot older
though and soon married someone else. Then he was in the Cherokee
Strip Land Run into Oklahoma. The farm that he got was where he and
his wife soon moved after the land run. His wife had tuberculosis and
died within a short time. Gene moved back to Barnes, Kansas and again
worked in his father's general store. By this time, Dora had grown up
and had become an eligible and attractive young lady, and soon she and
Gene were married.
In her later years, Dora told that she had always liked to drink
gunpowder green tea. She may have gotten the taste for it when she was
a girl and her Musgrove grandparents lived with her and her family.
Her Musgrove grandparents had come over from England and very likely
were tea drinkers. Gunpowder green tea is green tea processed so that
the tea leaves roll into very tiny balls. Green tea is unfermented tea
whereas the more common black tea has been fermented.
