CHAPTER: 001: Those Who Helped
Updated 2003/12/28
**********************************************************************
This book is dedicated to the author's mother, Leola May Smith
Ballard (1910-1996), who was always interested in hearing about
what new things her son had learned about her family. Her mother
was Leola James Ward Smith.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The foremost Ward family researcher on the very early Ward family is
Suzy Machamer whose husband has the Ward ancestory. Suzy through
her research and travels has pushed the Ward family ancestory back
several generations and has solved many major mysteries.
Suzy Machamer F. -
Cousin Cretha helped tremendously by providing copies of numerous
documents of the Leola James Ward Smith family.
Nancy Ward Greenberg provided an enormous amount of information
about the John W. Ward family.
Nancy Ward Greenberg \WJHJRJJN F. -
Judy Clark Felt who is a first cousin to Nancy Ward Greenberg
was also a source for the John W. Ward family.
Judy Clark Felt \WJHJRJVJ F. -
Harold L. Ogden helped by providing a tremendous amount of
information about the John J. Ward family. It is believed that
this family is connected to the Littleton L. Ward family.
Harold is a great great grandson of John J. Ward.

CHAPTER: 002: Charles Baxter Ward, the Obituary
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OBITUARY
Charles Baxter Ward
Charles Baxter Ward, born August 29, 1870, in Obion County,
Tennessee, moved to Denton County, Texas in 1881, and to Greer County
Page .2. 12-MAR-2004
in 1888, was married to Mollie E. Jones, August 2, 1899, and after
a protracted and painful illness died at the home of his mother in
Greer County, Oklahoma, Oct. 14, 1900, and was buried in Corinth
Cemetery, the Rev. W. A. McAnnally officiating.
On the morning before he died he called to his bedside his family and
friends and in the light of eternity drawing on him said that this
world was nothing more to him, that he was ready to go, ready and
willing to meet his God.
The deceased leaves a wife and infant child, a widowed mother, four
sisters and one brother to mourn their loss.
For more than ten years the writer has known the subject of this short
sketch, regarding him as one of our firm and faithful citizens.
As we sat by the bedside of the suffering and dying man and saw him
place his hands in those of a faithful and devoted wife and mother,
and realized of a truth that even in the hour of dissolution the
penitent sinner, may by faith in Christ turn his eyes to Calvary, fold
his careworn hands in the crucified hand of a sympathizing Savior and
from that hand receive the crown of life. We were made in our hearts
to exclaim, "O death where is thy sting."
After the banks of the turbid stream have been gently sloped by
intense suffering and the body could resist no longer, the voice of
the Master was heard saying: "Peace, be still," the spirit launched
out upon the placid bosom to swell the number of the redeemed through
the efficacy of the blood of Christ.
To the heartstricken wife and mother let the eternal truth of the
doctrine of the resurrection of the human body be plain and potent,
inasmuch as the grave is but an underground passage from gloom to
glory and that one's body at the resurrection will only soar higher
and shine brighter after having passed through its portals to obtain
the prize and gain a position with him who said: "Because I live, ye
shall live also."
Lee A. Womack
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The obituary does not tell that Charles Baxter Ward, who went by
Baxter, died of tuberculosis. About seven years after he died, his
wife Mary E. Jones Ward died of the same disease. Their daughter
Sadie Ward only lived another seven years before also dying of
tuberculosis. All three are buried side by side at Corinth Cemetery,
although, Sadie is unmarked.
Sadie Ward spent one summer staying with the family of Leola James
Ward Smith who was called Ola Smith. Sadie was tall, thin and
blond. She was very beautiful, or so Crethie Munro Smith, who was
a first cousin to her, thought.
The Ward family had suffered at least two other terrible tragedies
before the passing of the Charles Baxter Ward family. Littleton L.
Ward, who was the grandfather to Baxter, died as a result of some
kind of accident in November of 1849. Littleton, who was only
Page .3. 12-MAR-2004
forty-one years of age, left his wife with six children from age
seventeen down to age three.
On 28-AUG-1876, James T. Ward, who was the father of Baxter died
the day before Baxter turned six years old. Susan Mary Stone Ward,
the wife of James T. Ward, was left with five little children all
under six years of age. On the 1880 Census for Obion Co,
Tennessee, Charles Baxter Ward is listed as "Bud" Ward with his
sisters: Virgia, Orra, Lula and Ola.

CHAPTER: 003: Letters in the Ola Smith Family Bible
**********************************************************************
These letters are from the Ola Smith Family Bible which is owned by
the Cousin Cretha. These letters are of tremendous importance
genealogically. Many thanks are due to Cousin Cretha for carefully
making copies of these letters which are practically falling apart
from age and wear. She compared the author's type written copy with
the letters in order to maximize the accuracy of that typed copy.
The author must be excused for straightening out the spelling and even
somewhat the grammar. The aim here was to get these documents into a
form so that they can be read and understood. In many cases these
letters are very difficult to interpret.

Union City, Tenn 11.3.1913 Dear Cousin.
In looking through my old letters the other night I found the inclosed
letter and as there is no date to it, I do not know whether or not I
ever answered it. The party that was talking about buying the place
from me took it as his lawyer said as Uncle Jas. Oliver had owned it
so long the deed was all O.K. But Oscar bought part of it and wanted
to borrow some money on it and the man said while the deed seemed to
be O.K. he had rather you children would sign a quit claim deed or
have the court give a deed. I will or rather Uncle Jim Oliver will
have to pay a lawyer to do the work unless you children will sign it.
For fear I did not answer your letter I will now explain the whole
matter.
Aunt Sue will know if you do not that the square of land once belonged
to the Ward heirs, Aunt Mary, Sada, My Mother, Uncle Will, your father
and another sister. I have forgotten the name. My father bought Aunt
Sada's and Uncle Will's part. That left the place where Aunt Mary
lives and your father died. After your father died his place or the
place I am writing about was sold through the Chancery Court. Uncle
Jim Oliver bought it. Your Uncle John Stone sold it. We have the
papers showing that he did and that Uncle Jim bought it. But it was
sold through the Chancery Court and the Chancery Court records have
been burned.
While two of our best land attorneys claim the title perfectly good, I
want to straighten the matter while some of the people are living that
witnessed the sale. I do not believe you ever returned the quit claim
deed I sent you. I would be glad you would assist me in the matter as
I had rather pay you than to pay a lawyer.
We are all very well. I went out to see Aunt Mary Fletcher yesterday
eve. She looks very bad. I cannot see how she lives at all. Please let
me hear from you.

CHAPTER: 005: Letter from Ola Smith, 23-FEB-1914
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Olustee, Okla.
Feb the 23.
Dear Cousin,
I did not understand if it had just of been the land that my father
had and had it been sold to someone else. I think I could sign the
deed all right but as it is cannot say I will consent to sign it yet
think yourself in our place for just a little while and think what you
would do. I would like to save you the few dollars and hope we can. I
do not know what the rest want to do.
Page .5. 12-MAR-2004
I thought Aunt Sada bought our part and Grandma had a part. And Aunt
Sada would have Grandma's as long as she lived. And as nothing was
said about it when Aunt Sada died. [I] just thought Uncle Jim would
keep it while he lived. If he died as you have sold the place. If so
we do not want any going to court about it. When we get our part I
will sign the deed.
Is Aunt Mary living yet and how is all? I guess you have heard of
Orra's death ..... It is so hard to think ..... she is gone.
I understand about the abstract, but if we sign this quick claim deed
that will throw us out of it all or that is what I think. Creth, my
husband, is not at home so I do not know what he would think. I have
been waiting for him to come and as he has not yet come I [will] just
write what I think. Say, please do hard of me. I hope we can get it
fixed all right.
I would like so much to get a long letter telling all about the folks
of ..... If I could see some of my dear father's people. Tell some or
all of them to write to me.
Your Cousin,
Ola Smith

CHAPTER: 006: Letter from Ola Smith to Virgia Ward, 03-MAR-1914
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To: Virgia Ward
R.R.1
Granite, Okla.
Olustee, Okla.
3-3-1914
Well, how are you all this windy day. It sure is March today. We are
all OK but have bad colds and have been nearly sick with it, but I
[and] they are all better now. [We have] been taking pills and I do
not know what all.
Calie was sick last week but she did not loose any fat or she does not
look like she did. She is trying to walk and just goes it a crawling.
Leola is getting to be a big girl. She went to town with Odessa
yesterday evening and mailed a letter to Papa. D is trying for the
third grade. When school is out Crethie, Neva and Cellers are trying
ball playing. [For] Odessa, bookkeeping is all she can do but she is
having a lot more to do. But, I guess they are all doing fine.
Creth is still at Electra. He worked last week and [had] some to do
this week, but there is no work like there was. He may come home in a
Page .6. 12-MAR-2004
few days if he does not get some more work.
Virgia, Mr. Moss is still in the house he was in. I think he aims to
stay there until school is out. Mr. Milton is talking of getting Mrs.
Davis' house and have it moved and fixed onto his house, but I do not
know what he will do. We have not any one in our house yet, but there
have been three or four families [who have] moved to town since you
were here. Mr. Stowe has moved back in one of Mr. Walden's houses. I
do not know what he aims to do here.
Well I got a letter from G. W., and I answered it. I told him I would
not consent to sign that quick claim deed yet. I thought Aunt Sada
bought our part and Grandma had a part and Uncle Jim was keeping it
while he lived. I asked him if Uncle Jim was dead as he was selling
the land. When we got our part I would sign the deed. I do not know
what Lula wrote to him. Did he write to Sada and are you and her going
to sign the deed for him. I thought Creth was coming home and he would
come up there and could tell you about it. But I do not know when he
will come.
Ma, we, that is Cellers and D, have planted onions and potatoes. Jesse
and Estelle, how are those chickens? And, have you forgotten how to
write? Well, if you have [then] just learn again and write to us.
Well, Mrs. Adams has her a boarder, but she has not been right well.
We have not got much small pox here. There is just one case and that
is not hardly in town. It is at Mrs. Stewart's. They live south east
of Sarlies. If there is any more I do not know it. I hope there will
not be any more.
Calie is getting mad. I just do not get hardly any thing done, but I
think her gums are swollen for her jaw teeth and they hurt her.
We had a letter from Nina last week. They were all well but Aunt
Liola. But I guess she wrote to you all. She said she was.
We have not got any hens sitting yet. Cellers got some duck eggs, but
it was so cold we just used them. They are not laying now.
Well we all want to see you all so badly. Come when you can.
Well, Virgia, Mr. Melton's folks are carrying water. They cannot pump
hardly any with their pump. Mr. Hale's house sure looks big on the
hill.
Calie has the poker [and is] getting right black and has done put the
coal on the floor so that I will have to clean it up.
[I] was so sorry to hear about Mrs. McGuffin's mother. Well, all of
you write soon and come.
Ola Smith

CHAPTER: 007: Letter from Lula Nowlin, 19-???-1914
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This letter is in extremely bad condition and may be hard to follow.
It is photo-copied on twelve sheets. Each will be handled in turn.
They may not be in order. Some text may be lost to holes made at the
folds and to wear about the edges. Places where text could not be made
out at all have five periods to indicate that fact.
In order to break up the parts of the letter each sentence begins a
new paragraph.

Miss Virgia Ward.
Dear Sister and all.
After so long a time I will try to answer your letter which came to
hands some time ago and was glad to hear from you all but I know you
all do not think that I was not a going to answer but I thought that I
would .....
..... cousin and asked him about Aunt Sada's estate and why was it
that we did not get any of her estate for she did not have any heirs
for it to fall to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #2
White.
I wrote to him. I told him that I did not know any thing about it, and
if he would explain it to me so that I could understand it that I
would know that I did not have any right in it.
And, that why was it that we had not been called in to sign as we
became of age.
And what was meant by Chancery ..... from cousin Gus so I could tell
you what he had to say so I just received an answer today.
So I will tell you what I
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #3 that it looked like that we [have] a right to have a share in
it that I would sign it when he explained it all to me but that I was
not willing to sign anything until I knew that I did not have any
right in it.
But, I do not think that he explained it to me or I cannot see it that
way.
Page .8. 12-MAR-2004
He said that Aunt Sada sold her part of the Ward estate to his Pa
before she married, but he did not say what she did with her money
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #4 that she got for it.
He said that she did not have any estate but you know that that will
not do because she and Jim bought that place after they were married
and it looks like that she would have had a share in it.
Roy says she would have had to him it looks like to me that if Aunt
Sada sold her part the Ward estate before she married that Ma would
know something about it for she was married before we
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #5 left there.
I do not understand it now.
I will first write you all his letter as I want to take it up to
Denton when I go to let Uncle Johnny see it to see what he can tell me
about it.
Dear Cousin,
Your letter to hand and contents noted.
It is hardly necessary for you to sign deed now as
I filed a bill in Chancery.
It will cost me about $100.00 to do that.
When if you children
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #6 had have signed, it would have cost about $5.00.
However, I will explain in regard to Aunt Sada's estate.
Aunt Sada sold her part of the Ward estate to Pa before she was
married.
The place I had reference to that I wanted you all to sign was the
place that belonged to your father and after his death your Uncle John
Stone [was appointed] your guardian and he filed a bill in Chancery
and sold your father's or your home place.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #7 Uncle Jim Oliver bought it, but he left the deed with the
clerk.
..... had never
..... recorded the sale ..... the clerk
..... were burned and the deed with them.
Well then so, I did not know it until I had owned the place for some
time.
Page .9. 12-MAR-2004
Aunt Sada left no children, but as I said before she did not have any
property to leave.
The place where she died belonged to her husband.
I am sorry you all did not understand the
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #8 facts.
We are all well.
Aunt Mary is still living.
Yours .....
G. B. White
That is his letter that he wrote to me.
Well it is 20 minutes after 10 o'clock and all the rest are in bed and
asleep.
I guess I had better quit for the night.
I will write some more in the morning so good night to all.
Well, I did not get to finish this today and will try to finish it
tonight.
The child
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Page #9 ren are singing. I do not know whether I will write of much
..... long though if I do you may know that I was mistaken.
Virgia, how is everything out there? It is wet here. It has been
raining here about 4 or 5 weeks. They can not get to do much in the
fields. Roy and the ..... and quit.
I have not seen Aunt Liola or any of them but Junior since I came back
from out there but may .....

has rained so much that some of the land is seeping so he could not
plant corn before it did not rain any more. But I think it is going to
rain again tonight or it looks like it. The corn, they say, is getting
yellow. They say it is going to die ..... if it does not quit .....
Will find you all well. So I will close. Write soon and a long letter
to your sister.

..... not that they are mistaken though.
Well, how is you all's garden and how many little chickens have you
all got?
I have

[I] was up there last first Monday.
They were all up but Liola was not right well.
Ma, folk is all well ..... school.
She is at home now.
Well, it is getting late and I know you all will get tired reading
this or trying to read it be boring or right it read.

He got part of his corn plowed over and he has a right .....
